Joy rarely arrives all at once. It begins somewhere small and quiet, then opens outward until it fills the whole room. I wanted this painting to capture that gentle unfolding.

At its heart, a cluster of cobalt and pale sky blue gathers like the center of a bloom. From there, the color radiates: orchid and magenta, violet and soft lavender, sea glass green and deep leaf green, each shape moving a little farther from the center than the last. Slender umber stems anchor the base, while wide bands of white and pale lilac stretch toward the edges, as if the painting itself is taking a long, easy breath.

As I worked, I scraped back and layered over, letting textures and earlier colors surface through the whites. I love the way those veiled passages give the piece its airiness, a sense that the bloom is still opening and the joy is still spreading beyond the frame.

Joy Expanding brings a luminous, uplifting presence to a space, equally graceful in a study with rich moulding and heritage tones or in a light-filled, pared-back room where its soft palette can glow. To me, it is a painting about the way happiness grows when we make room for it, and about the quiet abundance that comes from letting ourselves open.
